Hello and welcome to Prepaid iPhone 4! Here I am going to teach you how to take your old (or new) iPhone 3G or iPhone 4 and turn it into a prepaid iPhone. So first let’s start with the basics.
What is a prepaid iPhone?
A prepaid iPhone (any phone can be prepaid, but here we are going to focus on iPhones) is one where you have no contract. Just let that sink in. There is absolutely no 2 year lock in period, and it is completely pay-as-you-go.
What will I Need to Do This?
You are going to need the following things:
- An iPhone
- A GoPhone sim card
- Half a brain
Ok, How Do I Make my iPhone Prepaid?
- An iPhone (iPhone 3G or iPhone 4, it doesn’t matter) that isn’t in contract. This means that it needs to be ‘unlocked’. You can buy an old iPhone 3G on eBay or craiglist for around $300. For an iPhone 4 it will probably cost you around $5-600. I know this sounds like a lot, but see this comparison to see how much money you will be saving (just so you know, you save more than $1,000 over 2 years)
- Next you are going to need a new sim card, a perfect one for this is an AT&T GoPhone plan. The GoPhone has unlimited talk and text, so it’s really the best plan to go with. Just go into an AT&T store and ask for a GoPhone sim card, tell them it’s for an AT&T phone if they ask. For the love of god don’t tell them it’s for an iPhone, or they won’t sell it to you.
- Now, you need to activate the sim card. This takes 1 minute tops, and you can do it online or over the phone. You can give them any IMEI # so long as it’s from an AT&T phone (NOT AN iPHONE IMEI #). If you can’t get an IMEI # then just call them up and say you’d like to activate it but don’t have the phone yet. Again, don’t tell them it’s for an iPhone (they shouldn’t ask why, but if they do)
- Last step – pop out the sim card tray on the iPhone and place your activated sim card in it. Slide the tray back in until it clicks, it should be flush with the outside of the phone. You now have a prepaid iPhone!

i want to swap it into my new unlocked iphone 4, yet im hesitant to cut my sim since there is no going back. will it really work seemlessly . i actually have a spare sim already cut with my imem info already on it, that i have cut by hand with a guide. but i was told it would be more difficult to swap out with my spare as opposed to just moving my working card from old phone to new. and does the switching to the new card disable the old one, or would both phones work technicly on the same plan if they both had the same info on the sim.
